Why the T in ChatGPT is AI's biggest breakthrough - and greatest risk

New Scientist

When ChatGPT first took the world by storm in 2022, its capabilities were so impressive that people happily looked past its awkward name. Yet hidden within those initials lies a key breakthrough responsible for sending artificial intelligence rocketing these past few years – and potentially a limitation that could see it crashing back to Earth. GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer, and it is the last word that matters most.

AI's growing enterprise gaps explain why AWS SageMaker is growing

We are excited to bring Transform 2022 back in-person July 19 and virtually July 20 - August 3. Join AI and data leaders for insightful talks and exciting networking opportunities. There are troubling gaps revealed in a new report showing that enterprises are not prioritizing security, compliance, fairness, bias and ethics. The study, conducted by O'Reilly, shows AI's adoption is struggling to reach maturity today and lacking prioritization in these areas may be, in part, a reason why. O'Reilly's annual survey of enterprise AI adoption found that just 26% of organizations have AI projects in production, the same percentage as last year. In addition, 31% of enterprises report not using AI in their business today, a figure that is up from 13% last year.

Artificial intelligence can help predict the need for ventilators

#artificialintelligence

The pandemic has put immense strain on ICUs, resulting in shortages of staff, beds, personal protective equipment and ventilators. It has also exposed the limitations of traditional predictive algorithms used to predict patient outcomes, manage capacity, and inform triage decisions. Use of artificial intelligence can help refine the raw data and present more useful knowledge, especially in the ICU setting, by separating the clinically-relevant information from the noise in a data rich environment. "This results in earlier recognition of changes in patient conditions and their evolving risks," said Dr. John Frownfelter, chief medical information officer at Jvion. "It also allows you to see patients holistically by bringing in data on behavioral risk factors that you wouldn't be able to see from the clinical data in the EHR."

How data can predict which employees are about to quit: Rather than relying on exit interviews and their comparisons to occasional employee surveys to determine engagement, organizations can turn instead to big data and advanced analytics to identify those workers at greatest risk of quitting.

#artificialintelligence

Rather than relying on exit interviews and their comparisons to occasional employee surveys to determine engagement, organizations can turn instead to big data and advanced analytics to identify those workers at greatest risk of quitting. A new Harvard Business Review article outlines how applying machine learning algorithms to turnover data and employee information can provide a much more accurate picture of workplace satisfaction. This measure of "turnover propensity" comprised two main indicators: turnover shocks, which are organizational and personal events that cause workers to reconsider their jobs, and job embeddedness, which describes an employee's social ties in their workplace and interest in the work they do. Though achieving this kind of "proactive anticipation" will require a sizable investment of time and effort to develop the necessary data and algorithms, the payoff will likely be worth it: "Leaders can proactively engage valued employees at risk of leaving through interviews, to better understand how the firm can increase the odds that they stay," per HBR. Artificial Intelligence: A Cybersecurity Solution or the Greatest Risk of All? Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity

#artificialintelligence

While AI is being leveraged in a wide number of areas, cybersecurity is one that has received special attention because of the rate at which threats are evolving and the volume of attacks. Organizations require a solution that can keep up. AI sometimes is championed as that solution – a silver bullet that will "solve" cybersecurity. While that isn't the case, AI is an exciting technology that provides some real-world benefits today, and promises to have even greater potential for the future.

Confronting the Greatest Risks To Financial Services' Future

#artificialintelligence

Digital disruption, fintech infiltration, big tech competition, or even new technologies such as artificial intelligence seem daunting. Yet the most serious threat to banks and credit unions lies closer to home but remains more difficult to address -- because it is ingrained in almost every traditional financial institution. Subscribe to The Financial Brand via email for FREE!Financial institutions are being disrupted on almost every front due to digital technologies, new competition, redefined business models and increasing consumer expectations. Increasingly they need to innovate, become more agile, utilize data and advanced analytics to support cost reduction and revenue improvement, and build partnerships with organizations who may also be competitors. So, which of these massive changes pose the greatest risk to the future of banking?

The promise of Artificial Intelligence in health IT

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around a long time, but it is a newer concept within healthcare. AI holds a lot of promise, particularly in the areas of population health management, healthcare access and quality. At Becker's Hospital Review Health IT Clinical Leadership 2018 event, I served on a panel that talked about the promise and possibilities of AI. AI and machine learning are hot topics in healthcare that are often used interchangeably, but they mean different things. AI is about making our technology "smarter," so that it uses curated knowledge to automate and improve function.

The greatest risk from artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

China is exploiting this historic opportunity in part through the world's largest surveillance network of human behavior, which is tapped for strategic industrial and military purposes in partnership with leading tech companies. China's well-funded strategic plan intends to dominate artificial intelligence by 2030. Dr. Eric Schmidt captured part of the problem facing much of the U.S. economy at a recent hearing for the House Armed Services Committee: "The DOD does not have an innovation problem, it has an innovation adoption problem." While the overdue warnings are welcomed by many and should be extended to the entire U.S. economy, Dr. Schmidt's role as chairman of the Department of Defense Innovation Advisory Board represents another risk in the form of corporate oligopolies.

Localis report warns of job losses because of robots

Daily Mail - Science & tech

England's poorest towns are set to be hit hardest by the rise of robots and automation, a new report today warns. Large swathes of the country face potentially devastating job losses because of a failure to equip workers with the skills for industries of the future, the paper says. The report, by the think-tank Localis, warned of a'staggering gulf' in how well-prepared different parts of the country are to adapt to the looming change in jobs. And it called for the government to devolve polices like apprenticeships and skills training to help different areas re-train people in a bid to prevent mass job losses. The report said England's economic prosperity faces a triple threat from automation, poor skills and a potential drop in migrant labour after Brexit. The vast bulk of funding is poured into the'golden triangle' of London, Oxford and Cambridge - leaving them well-equipped to take advantage of the change.
